Conference Guide

← Back to College Football Calendars

If you're picking a conference calendar and don't already follow one, here's roughly what you're subscribing to. College football conferences have shuffled a lot the last few seasons, so a couple of these look different than they did just a few years back.

ACC

Seventeen schools, still centered on the traditional Atlantic Coast footprint but stretched wide by additions like Stanford and Cal on the West Coast and SMU in Texas. Clemson, Florida State, and Miami are the programs most likely to be in national title contention in a given year; the rest of the league is deep and competitive without always being flashy.

Big Ten

Sixteen teams and, despite the name, not limited to the Midwest anymore, it now reaches the West Coast with Oregon, Washington, USC, and UCLA. Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State have been the league's usual heavyweights, though the newer West Coast programs have started crashing that party too.

Big 12

Sixteen teams spanning three time zones after absorbing several programs from the old Pac-12. It doesn't have the same string of recent national champions as the SEC or Big Ten, but it's become one of the more genuinely unpredictable leagues week to week, without a clear one or two teams everyone assumes will win it.

SEC

Sixteen teams, unchanged heading into this season since Oklahoma and Texas joined a couple of years back. Depth is the league's real signature, on most weekends a mid-table SEC team could still beat a ranked team from another conference, which is why the conference calendar here tends to have more nationally-relevant games than any other single feed.

Pac-12

Back this season after nearly collapsing when most of its old members left for other leagues. The rebuilt version pulls in Boise State, Fresno State, Colorado State, San Diego State, and Utah State, alongside the couple of original members that stayed. It's a very different league than the old Pac-12 usually associated with USC and Oregon, those programs are in the Big Ten now, but it's a real, active conference again.

The Group of Five

American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, and Sun Belt make up the rest of FBS. These leagues don't get the same TV attention as the Power Four, but they play a full season of real games, occasionally beat a ranked Power Four opponent, and their conference calendars here work exactly the same way, every game, every week, straight into your calendar app.
